Craft
This Carved Jicara Bowl is handcrafted from the fruit of the Calabash Tree in Southern Mexico. Children are taught to draw by their parents not with a pen and paper, but through carving designs of animals and plants into the rind. The fruit is then cut in half, the flesh removed and it is left to dry in the sun before being painted and polished. Carving calabash is a pre-hispanic craft and no two are the same. These bowls are often used to serve drinks such as tejate, made from maize and cacao, in indigenous communities. Smaller ones are used to drink mezcal.
